Early this morning, around 5:30am, a meteor blazed across the sky in the northwestern United States. Sighting reports have come in from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana. Many describe a spectacular fireball which seemed to explode twice in midair. You can see video of the fireball in the SpaceSpot Galley
here.
Many wondered if it was spy satellite USA 193 being shot down. No, that is planned for later this evening. You can see USA 193's path across your sky using our online satellite (and other object tracker)
SkyTrax, we've added the secret spy satellite to our list of objects. You better hurry because it may not be orbiting much longer...in fact...tonight may be your last chance to see it.
As for the meteor, as it turns out, this is a relatively common event. Some experts have calculated that as many as 100 fireballs as brights as Venus smash into the Earth's atmosphere every day. There are some reports of a ground impact, ,we'll keep you updated as more information becomes available.
