The Internet is abuzz with news of a meteorite impact in Peru. Witnesses say they saw a fireball that they initially thought was an aircraft. The impact, near the remote village of Carancas high in the Andes, created a 30-meter wide by 6-meter deep crater. Even more startling are reports of villagers becoming sick from a strange odor emanating from the hole in the ground. "Boiling water started coming out of the crater and particles of rock and cinders were found nearby. Residents are very concerned" local officials said. We have place some video of the impact crater
here in the SpaceSpot Gallery.
Scientist are skeptical about the crater's origin since an object big enough to create it would have released the energy equal to about 1 kiloton of TNT, equal to a tactical nuclear weapon). Seismometers and infrasound records have so far turned up no data recording the event. We'll bring you more news on this as soon as we have it.
